Where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea, Skagen

Skagen, 01/06/24

30 years on, we're back in Skagen in northern Denmark to rediscover Grenen, the shifting tip of the sand at the gateway to the Baltic Sea. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet in opposing currents and waves. It's quite exceptional in an enormous area of sand and dunes.

It's as beautiful, magical and fun as ever. There were a few drawbacks, however. We were alone at the time, but the strangeness and beauty of the place has brought its share of tourists. It seems manageable in May, but less so in July and August. It's more difficult to eat fish and prawns as most of the fishing boats are tied up at the quayside to replenish stocks. It's a blessing in disguise, but you have to accept and encourage it. As for the horizon, it is full of heavy and numerous boats with their share of nuisances, largely responsible for the pollution of this sea.

Despite everything, the walk is well worth the diversions and confirms that we absolutely must protect the Baltic, as we can really feel the fragility of the balance.

A map of the Baltic Sea by Jean Denant at home in the SKAGEN ODDE NATURCENTER !!!

This museum is located at the northern tip of Denmark, close to where the North Sea meets the Baltic at Skagen Grenen. It is dedicated to the effects of sand, water, wind and light. It was designed by Jorn Utzon, architect of the Sydney Opera House, among other buildings. MBD79 had the pleasure of presenting a map of the Baltic Sea by Jean Denant. A small map remains on permanent display in the Museum.

I discovered an exceptional location for a Jean Denant map facing the sea. It's the obvious place at the entrance to the Baltic. Once the location is found, everything remains to be done 😉.
