MB D79 unveils the first mirror map of the Baltic Sea
facing the sea in Jūrmala, Latvia
July 2025
At the beginning of July, at the end of Turaidas Street in Dzintari, the monumental work MARE BALTICUM, designed by French artist Jean Denant, was inaugurated opposite the beach in the presence of the French Ambassador to Latvia, the Mayor of Jūrmala, the Director of the French Institute in Latvia and representatives of the city's institutions.
This solemn event marked the completion of the project, which saw significant involvement from the Jūrmala City Centre for Cultural and Environmental Design, the French association MB D79 and its president, Martin Bez, and the French Institute in Latvia.
This work of art, located in the heart of the city, right in front of the Baltic Sea, draws everyone's attention to the issues that threaten the oceans and waters around the world today. Now more than ever, we must all be committed to preserving our environment, in accordance with our means. This work invites us to think concretely about the Baltic Sea and to draw our societies' attention to the protection of the oceans, the seabed, and the flora and fauna that surround us.
As Jean Denant said: ‘Today, this sea – this continent – must be defended, loved and cared for. Its ecological problems and political challenges oblige each and every one of us to commit to its preservation, as the cradle of our civilisations.’
Our objective: the installation of monumental mirrored works facing the sea
"The ultimate objective is the establishment monumental works mirrored facing the sea, each proudly adorning an emblematic wall of a neighboring country. These shiny mirrors then become luminous bearers of awareness and eloquently trace the contours of the Baltic Sea with a visual and symbolic echo between united nations. "
The proposals are fictitious. Born from our imagination, they exist only to try to make the dream possible. We are looking for walls all around the Baltic Sea. We are counting on you to talk about it to those around you and give us ideas so that we can offer facilities.
