The Actors
Over the past forty years or so, the Baltic Sea's ecological problems have been increasingly taken on board by governments, associations, public and private foundations as well as all kinds of events. We congratulate and encourage them, because the results are there. However, much remains to be done, especially in today's environment of heightened geopolitical tensions.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of these actors. We are counting on you to help us improve it.

The Baltic Commission for the Protection of the Marine Environment – also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) – is an intergovernmental organization (IGO) and regional maritime convention in the Baltic Sea region. A regional platform for environmental policy development, HELCOM was established in 1974 to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution.
The Baltic Sea Conservation Foundation:
In cooperation with partners in the Baltic Sea region, our Foundation seeks to restore and strengthen the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. Our goal is to protect and maintain the unique habitats and species of this region by reducing environmental pressures and pollution, enabling the creation of new protected areas and improving the management of existing ones.
The Baltic Sea Project within the UNESCO Associated Schools Network aims to bring together teachers and students from Baltic Sea countries to work towards a common goal: raising environmental awareness among future generations, supporting environmentally friendly attitudes the environment and teaching young people the skills to notice and explore changes in their environment.
Interreg Baltic Sea Region 2021-2027 is a source of EU funding. We offer more than money: we bring together cultures, perspectives and expertise to achieve the best shared ideas and solutions. With our support, projects drive the transition to a green and resilient region. Together we improve the lives of the people of the Baltic Sea.
