The Baltic Sea, one of the world's busiest and most ecologically fragile bodies of water, is on the brink of a major environmental disaster. According to Jonatan Thörnqvist, a Swedish maritime safety expert, a large-scale oil spill in the region is not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’, Swedish television reports.
With more than 2,000 commercial vessels sailing daily through the narrow sea lanes, including oil tankers, chemical tankers and bulk carriers, the risk of collision, grounding or mechanical failure is increasing. The shallow depth of the Baltic Sea, its limited water renewal and the sensitivity of its ecosystems make it particularly vulnerable to long-term damage caused by oil contamination.
